I came across the following posted today on wasabia’s page. Hope you’re partying tonight the way you always dreamed of. Happy New Year everyone!
What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?
—Ella Fitzgerald (1960)
When the bells all ring and the horns all blow
And the couples we know are fondly kissing.
Will I be with you or will I be among the missing?
Maybe it’s much too early in the game
Ooh, but I thought I’d ask you just the same
What are you doing New Year’s
New Year’s eve?
Wonder whose arms will hold you good and tight
When it’s exactly twelve o’clock that night
Welcoming in the New Year
New Year’s eve
Maybe I’m crazy to suppose
I’d ever be the one you chose
Out of a thousand invitations
You received
Ooh, but in case I stand one little chance
Here comes the jackpot question in advance:
What are you doing New Year’s
New Year’s Eve?

Speaking of celebrations, today is Mardi Gras! Lots of parading, samba-ing, and drinking going on all over the place, including with the Krewes in New Orleans, and the samba schools and street bands called blocos and bandas celebrating both in the enormous Sambadrome and in neighborhoods throughout Rio de Janeiro and many other cities across South America. The major samba school competition, which is usually fiercely contested and always joyous to behold, began Saturday and ends tonight. The Desfile de Campeões, or Parade of Champions, is slated for this Saturday night.
For several years, ccarriconde has compiled a beautiful archive documenting the carnaval preparations of one samba school: Imperio Serrano. Taking us behind the scenes at their headquarters, she captures intimate glimpses of men, women, and kids hard at work welding supports for the elaborate floats, sculpting and painting decorations, making costumes, and rehearsing the phenomenally precise bateria, or drum corps. She has some new pictures up now, some of which are gathered here, with a bunch from previous years. Clicking on any of them will bring you to a stream with several more wonderful examples. Here’s hoping Carnival Queen Cristina has a lot more performance shots coming up this week!

So what were you for Halloween? Yes we know it’s not until tomorrow, but lots of folks caroused in parades and had fright night parties this weekend—did you attend any blood-and-guts blowouts?? Let’s see the pics! Paste your links into the comments and we’ll post some of the best later in the day.
(And stay tuned for some serious trick or treating tomorrow…!)
