Working on It

1

Here’s an update on service issues from Fotolog:

Over the last couple of days, you might have seen an “Unexpected Error” message on your own page or member pages you intended to visit.

The “Unexpected Error” is the result of something great and something sad: We’re now getting over a billion pageviews per week but this huge traffic also puts a lot of stress on our hardware.

We’ve been working on fixing the problem, which happens when a lot (a lot!) of members are uploading pictures at the same time. Because our databases are so big, we can only work on one letter at a time to minimize the impact. Over the weekend, we’ve been upgrading the servers that store data for accounts starting with M, A, and S. We’re currently upgrading F, S and W. Accounts starting with C will be following there after.

During these server upgrades, you’ll see an “Error” message when trying to access a member page with a letter we’re currently working on.

The maintenance message is as follows:

Error
Sorry, this page is temporarily disabled while our engineers are working on it.
Return to the previous page
Visit Fotolog home page

To fully improve things, we’ll need to continue to move user accounts and their photos to a new home and you might see these maintenance messages more frequently over the next couple days.

We know that this all is rather unpleasant. We’re as unhappy about it as you are and would like to ask you to please bear with us. Thank you.

=== En Español ===

Gracias.

Home Improvement

From Yossi Langer, Fotolog’s Director of Products, comes very cool news about a change you may have noticed already…

After years of faithful service, we’ve decided to retire the Fotolog homepage. We’ll miss it. But we’ve replaced it with something even better: a new homepage that’s faster and more local and focuses more on you good-looking people. Plus, we think, it’s a much prettier page! But never mind what we think—what do YOU think?

P.S.: If you miss the old “Newest Members” and “Most Viewed” categories, don’t worry: they’ll be back in a little while—and better than ever.

P.P.S.: Members in Latin America might have noticed that the cameras they use are now appearing under their archive photos. Fotolog is partnering with Mercado Libre to let our members find great cameras. If you’re looking to upgrade, click on the link and check it out!

Men vad tycker DU?

Group Dynamics

1

Fotolog just added an awesome new refinement to your Friends/Favorites list: Now your favorite Groups are actually separated out from your favorite individual members. Click on the Favorite Groups link at the bottom of your F/F list, and it brings you to a new Groups tab in your Friends/Favorites page.

2

Now you can browse new photos in all your fave Groups at a glance, and check out all your friends’ latest pics quickly, without the constant Group updates dominating your list. So if you haven’t wanted to add Groups to your Fave list, now you can with no worries!

Of course, this upgrade is just the latest improvement to the Fotolog F/F list: over the past few weeks we’ve rolled out a clean and more efficient new page design, along with the ability to sort your F/Fs by the date you added them to your list. We hope you enjoy the new toys! As always, please let us know what you think.

Great Fotolog News from the Official Fotolog Page:

Notice anything different about Fotolog? We’ve gone from three to seven languages, adding French, German, Swedish, and Dutch to the languages you can use to surf Fotolog. Not every single page is translated, but the ones you need to get around the site all are. If you speak one of the new languages, tell your friends that Fotolog just got a lot easier for them to use. If you don’t, well, why not try using Fotolog in Swedish?

Two New Features

1

Yesterday, Fotolog made two small changes we want you to know about.

First, some of you will now be able to pay for Gold Camera memberships using your mobile phones—even if you don’t have a credit card. Using Allopass, a company we’ve joined in the Hi-Media family, members in France, Spain, Germany, and the United Kingdom can pay via SMS text messages or over a land-line telephone. Users in Portugal can pay using SMS. We’re offering one-month Gold Camera memberships at a special price—if you live in those locations, try it now! We’ll add Allopass in more countries in the coming months.

Second, your favorite groups will now appear separately from individual Fotolog members in your Friends/Favorites list on your Fotolog page. Groups are one of the coolest things about Fotolog, and we want to make sure they get a special place on your page. A lot of people haven’t wanted to add groups to their F/F lists in the past, since they update so frequently and can tend to dominate your list. That’s not a problem any more: now they have their own section, just below your F/Fs. We’re continuing to work on this feature, so stay tuned for more news.

You can check out all the groups by clicking the GROUPS link at the top of every page—try adding a few to your F/F list if you haven’t already. There are thousands of groups, so you’re bound to find one you like—and if you don’t, it’s easy to start a new one.

New Member Profiles!

Breaking news about some cool new Fotolog features, from the Official Fotolog Fotolog page:

You’ve probably noticed the recent changes to your About page—
beginning with the fact that it’s grown from a pop-up window to a full-size page, with lots of room to share more of your world with your fellow Fotolog members. In the past few weeks we’ve added 5 new fields for you to enter info about yourself: you can describe your occupation or school info; write about the kinds of photos you like to post on your Fotolog page; and list your favorite songs, cds, movies, actors, sports teams and athletes. But we think we saved the best for last: starting today, you can upload a photo of yourself directly to your Profile! (Terms of Service still apply, of course.)

To create your brand-new Member Profile, just click on the Profile section in My Account. These new features cover just a few of the interests that make you special; we’ll be adding more as we start to hear what you think. What else would you like to see in your Fotolog Profile? Let us know!

PS - You might have noticed that email is once again being sent to you when people post in your guestbooks. If you don’t get those emails now but you want to, go to My Account > Preferences and change “New guestbook posting” to “Yes” in the “Email notifications” section.

Breaking News

Some truly amazing news from Fotolog today. Here are a few excerpts from Adam Seifer’s announcement:

Fotolog, Inc. has been acquired by Hi-Media Group, a French company with a number of businesses in countries around the world, including online publishing and community, online advertising and electronic payment services.

As the Fotolog community gets bigger and bigger, it only gets more and more important to ensure that the company has everything it needs to keep going and growing. We also want to get better at meeting the needs of our increasingly global member base (after a couple of years of astounding growth in South America, Europe has really taken off in the past year!).

At this point you’re probably wondering how will this affect the Fotolog site. We want to reassure you that:

- Fotolog will still be free
- The core Fotolog team is staying on board and will continue working on the projects we’ve got lined up
- Pretty soon we should be able to integrate Hi-Media’s Allopass service to make it easier for people around the world to pay for Gold Camera (but once again: Fotolog will still be free)
- And, as I mentioned above, you may even see some fun new publishing features that we might not have been able to build on our own

But the fundamental Fotolog experience will continue to be what it has always been.

WOW. Read the entire announcement at the Official Fotolog Fotolog. Congratulations to the entire Fotolog team!

Stick ’em Up!

5

Our friends the fun wizards at MOO have just unveiled an awesome new toy: StickerBooks. You can make a set of 90 cute stickers—removable!, restickable!—directly from your Fotolog archives. Just click the MiniCards link under any of your photos and then the Make Stickers button. Every sticker one can be a different image, or you can upload fewer pics and get more of each one. The little buggers are made of really good-quality vinyl, and they don’t rip or scratch easily. They come wrapped in a bright-colored book of your choice, on sheets of 6 that you can tear out and share with your peeps. Maybe the best part? They’re just $9.99. Maybe an even better part? Shipping to anywhere in the world (usually just $2.99 for these) is free in July. Go crazy!

You’ve Got Message!

2

Welcome to Fotolog Messenger.

Today Fotolog is giving members a new way to talk to each other. You should now be seeing little icons that look like this next to some members’ names under the title on their Fotolog pages: 2 Whenever you do, that’s a sign that you can click the icon to send an instant private message to that Fotolog member. You can chat for as long as you want (as long as you’re both logged in to Fotolog). It’s a great way to see when your friends are online, and to send messages that are just for them.

You decide who gets to send you a message: you can let any Fotolog member see if you’re on Fotolog and contact you, or you can let only your Friends/Favorites contact you, or you can turn it off completely. It’s up to you. To set your Fotolog Messenger preferences, just go to the Preferences section in your My Account page. You can change your settings at any time.

You can also simply Log Out and Log In again, which will prompt you to set the Fotolog Messenger preferences.

Fotolog Messenger is currently in beta; over the next few weeks, the Messenger icons should start appearing next to member names in your Friends and Favorites list too, making it even easier to begin a Fotolog chat.

There are more details (in Spanish and Portuguese too) at the Official Fotolog Fotolog Page.

More questions? Check out the Fotolog Messenger FAQ. Have fun, and happy chatting!

Free MOO for All!*

*While supplies last.

Just click the “Get printed MiniCards of your photos” link under your main photo, and then click “Make a 10 Pack,” and follow the directions. It’s quick, easy, and very fun.

Check out the MOO Cards Group to see the cards your fellow Fotolog members are creating, and then when you receive your cards, which should be within 10 business days, you can share yours with the world too.

Have fun. And thanks for being part of the Fotolog family!

Fotolog Turns Five

1

Five years ago, on May 23, 2002, heif and spike uploaded the first “live” photos on Fotolog.

3
from heif

4
from mike

It wasn’t the first time heif (aka Scott Heiferman, Fotolog Co-founder) had posted a photo on the Web—he had been doing his picture of the day on his own Web site for a couple years. But, along the way he had a key insight: posting your photos online doesn’t just have to be a publishing thing—it can be a social thing.

And that’s why we built Fotolog.

And that’s why, 5 years later, more than 8 million members have shared nearly a quarter billion photos. Fotolog isn’t just a tool for archiving and cataloging all of your photos. It’s a place where you share your photos with your friends and their friends (and their friends), and end up connecting with new people from around the world. Fotolog isn’t just about pictures… it’s about the conversations that happen when people show up every day to share a little window into their lives.

It’s been a fantastic five years: Fotolog has really come a long way.

From that first, super simple homepage to where we are now, showcasing recent and interesting photos from members in every country around the planet.

5
(Click image to see a full-size version.)

From the uncertainty of those early days when we were never really sure if we’d be able to keep up with the insane growth, the Fotolog technology and team have really evolved. We now have a great team of 25 people who have built (and rebuilt and rebuilt) a really solid foundation to keep Fotolog humming increasingly more quickly and increasingly more reliably. And, possibly best of all, because we’re not putting out fires every day (boy I’m glad those days are over), the team is spending more and more time on what comes next.

We’re having more fun than we’ve ever had working on new product features (and improvements to what’s already there). There’s some really neat stuff coming down the pipe: Fotohunt photo contests should (finally) be launching in the next couple of weeks. We’re working on expanded member profiles, additional page customization tools and what we think will prove to be some very juicy search tools—all ways to make it easier and more fun to connect with the people and photos that are most interesting to you.

So stay tuned. And thank you for being part of the Fotolog community—when I say Fotolog is as much about people as it is about photos, the people I’m talking about are you. We look forward to checking out your photos and getting to know you for another 5 years.

MOO Says Hi!

1

By now you’ve probably noticed the link under your photos that says “Get printed MiniCards of your photos.” If you’re like me, you’ve even clicked that link, followed the quick and easy directions, and ordered MiniCards of your photos. Wasn’t that cool?!

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, it’s time to get with the program! Fotolog MiniCards are made by MOO, a great little printing company that is dedicated to helping you share your photos in the offline world. MOO’s MiniCards are about half the size of a normal business card and printed on nice heavy stock, with a matte finish. They come in packs of 100, and you choose and crop your photos directly out of your Fotolog archive. You can mix it up however you like—100 different cards, 10 each of 10 different images, or anything in between. Then you decide what you want to print on the back of the cards—name, URL, email, title of photo, etc.—and that’s it. Click purchase, and you’ll have your box of MOO cards within about 10 business days. A box of 100 MiniCards costs $19.99 (€14.99; £9.99). Shipping is a flat rate of $4.99 (€3.99; £2.99) to anywhere in the world.

6

From personal experience, I can tell you that the Fotolog MiniCard ordering process was quick and easy, they arrived in a pleasantly surprising 7 days, and they look beautiful. (Click on the image below to see a larger view of my own cards.) The printing is expert, and the color fidelity and clarity are really good—better than I imagined they would turn out.

7

And the news gets even better: In celebration of Fotolog’s Fifth Anniversary (which is this week!), we are giving Gold Camera members one free set of 10 MiniCards. Starting tomorrow, May 23, simply click on that link under your main photo while you’’re logged in to your Gold Camera account and follow the directions. (The give-away will continue through May 31.) It’s just our “small” way of saying thank you for supporting Fotolog, and being a part of the greatest photo-sharing community in the world.

THANKS!

Announcing: The FotoWidget

widgetmainnew

Want to display your Fotolog thumbnails outside of Fotolog—on your blog or social network home page—so visitors immediately see your latest and greatest shots and can easily click through to your Fotolog page? Yeah, we heard you and we thought it was a good idea too. Fotolog’s latest feature, called the FotoWidget, lets you do just that: create a FotoWidget of your Recent Photos and add it to your own personal blog. (The FotoWidget is now in Beta; the ability to make a Friends & Favorites FotoWidget is in the works too.) Check out The Daily F’log’s own FotoWidget in the sidebar on the right.

alongwidget

A vertical FotoWidget with tiny thumbnails, actual size.

Creating your own FotoWidget is easy: while logged in, go to the FotoWidget page (this link will be on the Fotolog Home Page) and customize the way your FotoWidget will look. As you can see from the examples here, your widget can be either horizontal or vertical, and you can choose to display from one to six recent photos. You have the choice of two thumbnail sizes—100×75 (normal Fotolog thumbnail size) and a tiny 50×37 size. You also have full control over the colors of the text, link, background, and border, with two expanded color palettes and even a color slider to create your own shades.

Once you’ve set all your options, copy the code and paste it into the appropriate file or section of your blog or home page. (Note: some sites don’t allow javascript code.) The thumbnails will update automatically when you upload new photos to Fotolog. Try it out, and let us know what you think!

Feed Me, Fotolog!

feed

I know you’re really busy, but have you noticed the little orange icon and link below everyone’s Recent Photos? Hallelujah, RSS feeds are here. “Cool,” you say, “but… what are you talking about?” Well, for those of you who haven’t explored them yet, an RSS feed—RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication—is a tool you can use to be alerted to new content appearing on Web sites, blogs, and now, Fotolog. So if you’re online working on ten different things, with no time to surf Fotolog, you can still check your RSS feeds, which update automatically when new photos are posted. Your Fotolog RSS feeds could essentially become a brand-new F/F list, one you can see without even being on Fotolog. (You can also add your Friends and Favorites list as a feed, allowing you to see the six most recent F/Fs, just like on your Fotolog page.)

You can use Fotolog’s RSS feed in two ways.
