Split Rocker
From jeff_koons (yes, that Jeff Koons!)
For years, museum-going Fotolog members have been snapping pics of their friends and family interacting with the whimsical, post-ironic sculptures of the American contemporary artist Jeff Koons. Last year at this time, in fact, in a post titled Puppy Love, we documented several fond souvenirs of encounters with Koons’ Puppy: an enormous topiary of a West Highland White Terrier, installed at the Guggenheim Bilbao.
And I’ve seen several shots of his Tulips and other installations, too:
So fittingly, Fotolog is happy to announce this week that Jeff Koons (or at least one of his representatives!) has joined us as a Fotolog member himself.
More Jeff Koons
In conjunction with his brand-new exhibition Jeff Koons Versailles, which opened Wednesday and continues through December 14, Koons will post photos of his works in their new temporary environments—in the Royal Apartments and in the famous and sublime gardens of Versailles. Koons is no stranger to controversy, and this exhibit has some French traditionalists up in arms, as documented in this New York Times article. But Koons’ response to his 17 sculptures accepting an extended invitation to stay at the château of Louis XIV, the Sun King, is disarming in its Ancien Régime logic:
He praised the “openness” of France for its decision to exhibit an American artist at Versailles. And he said that he drew his inspiration for his floral sculptures from the “fantasy and control” shown by the Sun King himself.
“It comes from just thinking about what it would be like, I mean, what Louis would kind of have the fantasy to see when he would wake up in the morning, and that he could walk to the window and look out in the gardens and think, you know, ‘I would like to see a sculpture made out of 90,000 live, growing plants and I’d like to see it by the time I get back this evening,’ ” Mr. Koons said, referring to Louis XIV. “And voilà, there it would be.”
In any event, it seems to us that pairing Louis Quatorze’s Baroque penchant for frivolity and excess with Jeff Koons’ Neo-Pop grandiosity could just turn out to be the best two-person show of the new art season.
If you visit the Koons exhibit at Versailles this fall, post your photos on Fotolog and then let us know here in the comments, and we’ll repost them in this article!
