Here’s a fact that will surprise many people:
“O Canada” did not become Canada’s official national anthem until July 1, 1980, almost exactly a century after it was first sung (June 24, 1880). The music was composed by Calixa Lavallée, and the French lyrics were written by Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier.
Although the English words are OK, I love the original French lyrics, because they show that Canada was founded on the Christian (mainly Catholic and Anglican) faith.
In these days of secularism, “political correctness,” and growing hatred of genuine Christianity, I propose the following, for every public event:
(1) that, in Quebec, Canadians should always sing a first verse consisting of the original French lyrics and a second verse consisting of the later English lyrics; and
(2) that, outside of Quebec, Canadians should always sing a first verse consisting the later English lyrics and a second verse consisting of an English translation of the original French lyrics.
Here is my own translation (accurate and yet rhyming) of the French lyrics, which could be used (or improved):
O Canada! Our ancestors’ great land,
Thy brow is wreathed with glorious flower bands!
As in thy arm, ready sword to wield, so ready cross to bear!
Thy history is an epic of achievements brilliant and fair,
Thy valor too, tempered in faith,
Will now protect our homes, our rights each day,
Will now protect our homes, our rights each day.

Oops! I have a slight, but important, correction to my translation, above.
In the third line, I wrote, “As in thy arm,” but I should have written, “As in thine arm.”
It is necessary to use “thine” (rather than “thy”) before a vowel (”arm”).
