An earthquake estimated at magnitude 7.7 on the Richter scale struck northern Chile today at 12:40 p.m. local time. There are early reports of damage, and minor injuries. The quake was centered in the village of Quillagua, near Calama, in the Antofagasta Region. Buildings, roads, cars, and power lines in the cities of Antofagasta and Tocopilla have sustained damage, and Tocopilla has issued reports of at least 40 injuries. The earth-shaking was felt strongly even in the capital of Santiago, 1255 kilometers south of the epicenter.
Two hours later, a second temblor of 5.7 magnitude struck, centered about 60 kilometers northwest of Antofagasta.

Two people were confirmed dead and 117 were injured in the magnitude 7.7 quake, which raised massive dust clouds in Chile’s mountainous north and shook buildings in isolated cities up and down the Pacific coast.
Dozens of road workers were reported trapped in and around a highway tunnel that collapsed in the hardest-hit area.
“At the Galleguillos tunnel we understand there are some 50 people trapped,” Navy Captain Ignacio Rojas told local television. “However, we are receiving information now that there could be more people trapped inside.”
UPDATE from CNN:
About 50 construction workers trapped in a collapsed roadway tunnel after a major earthquake in northern Chile, have been rescued, high-level government sources said Wednesday.

LAs cosas estan mejor en la capital del 2º region de Chile, Antofagasta, pero hay muchas otras zonas afectadas

Chile is a country of eruptions and earthquakes and we are rather used to that…but it’s always sad to see our countryfellows suffer!
Last night we called our little nephews and niece in Arica, they were all fine… a bit scared but fine.
Today, Thursday 15 there was another strong quake in the area.

por lo visto hasta en esta página el centralismo se nota. en Antofagasta, además de la cornisa de hotel caída que sale en la tele todo está funcionando. Tocopilla, María Elena y Quillagua son las más afectadas. 4000 viviendas en Tocopilla y 2000 en María Elena tienen serios daños o fueron derrumbadas, mientras que 15.000 son lso damnificados en la zona.
en Calama, pese a los VII grados Mercalli, se registraron daños mínimos, sin compromiso para las viviendas ni las vidas, gracias al estrato duro del suelo. diversas organizaciones y vecinos ya están organizando ayuda para Tocopilla, María Elena y Quillagua, quienes nos necesitan más que los de la ciudad de la foto, que solo figura por ser capital regional.

Mucha fuerza a la zona del norte grande de Chile. Tuve la suerte de conocer esos maravillosos lugar y cuando me enteré del terremoto me dió mucha pena, por todas las personas que están sufriendo. Yo viví el terremoto del año 85 en Santiago y es terrible la fuerza de la naturaleza, aunque era chica igual me acuerdo de cómo se ondulaba la calle y los postes de luz, y todo en casa se caía.
Muchos cariños a la linda gente de Iquique, Calama, Antofagasta, María Elena, Tocopilla y todas las zonas afectadas.

well.. i’d like to tell you that you made a mistake in the spelling of the name of the village wich was the epicenter, that is correctly written this way: Quillagua.
A good thing about all this is that the people notice and care about small villages too, but I hope people keep doing that even when nothing bad is happening.

About the earthquake.
Antofagasta city is built over a big block of healthy rock, we are all fine.
The epicenter was 150 kms to the north, near Tocopilla city. They are in problems, rebuilding big part of the city.
The shake was around 800 kms, from Iquique to Copiapó, all the north of Chile (3 regions)
