From jpw
This great series seems appropriate to look at in the afterglow of the Fourth. Shooting in the time- and water-worn environs of Niagara Falls, New York, just a stone’s throw from his home in Buffalo, jpw has recently assembled an album of typical tourist shots—not of the Niagara River and Falls, but of the tourists typical of the 20 million who visit the site every year. And with a subject and canvas so vast, he smartly hones in on the details of the sightseers—a pair of soaked trousers, a father’s sure grip, the luminous corner of a woman’s sheer wrap (is she gazing at the Falls, or at us? Tilt your screen down to find out). With his sharp eye and quiet restraint, jpw transcends the Scenic Overview school of photography and opens your mind to a flood of larger ideas: how boring tourism often is; the global nature of consumerism; the vital and intimate ability to be alone in a crowd; and, thankfully, the timelessness of natural beauty. I’d definitely be up for a road trip with him.
