Last September, at the urging of mayor Gilberto Kassab, São Paulo’s City Council overwhelmingly passed new “clean city” legislation banning most forms of “visual pollution,” including advertising on the city’s estimated 13,000 billboards, and even on all taxis, buses, airplanes, and blimps. (Read the International Herald Tribune story, here.) The law went into effect this January, and now tonydemarco has begun to document the new face of SP: empty billboard facades, ghostly blank walls, freshly scrubbed storefronts. There has been a lot of healthy debate on the law, and on what advertising does and doesn’t do to, and for, a city like São Paulo. With his latest pictures, Tony asks for your opinions with the provocative question: “Kassab, gênio ou idiota?” How would you react if one day your city went ad-free? Are you from São Paulo? Let Tony know what you think!

This is a great initiative and I wish it would happen in Paris too. I say “gênio”.

It would be weird and it would never happen, but I’d sure like to see it tried in NYC. Maybe zoned.

I think it´s not necessary to be so extremist.
They shouldtry and reach an agreement on some sort of limits.

I don’t live in Sao Paulo anymore. I quit that horrible city. But I totally agree with Mr. Kassab. The city is much better without those huge ads. And if the product and its communication are really good, they can live without billboards.

São Paulo has many more problems to do as an emergency…
at the same time Kassab is getting the billboards out.. he is also erasing every graffiti around the whole city… SÃO PAULO IS ALL GREY.. an awful color between the grey sky, grey poles, grey concrete, grey pavement, grey bridges.. and now on every wall too…
for me he is a great IDIOTA
parabéns tony pela documentação

[…] Gigantic billboard ads, trompe l’oeil murals, elaborate graffiti art: for better and worse, in today’s imagery-saturated urban spaces, anything goes. (Except in São Paulo.) Here are a few riffs on how we turn the tables and cut these behemoths down to size with our lenses, taking our visual environment back, slice by slice. […]

[…] Well, the huge billboards of São Paulo may still be blank, free of any imagery due to last year’s “clean city” legislation. But the streets themselves are a different story. Check it out: for at least a year, a few enterprising young artists who post under the Fotolog name 6emeia have been beautifying the city’s storm sewer openings with their cute and clever cartoon paintings. And a local exhibition of their work has been extended through September. Congratulations to them! […]
