I’m delighted to introduce the first in a regular series of posts from Fotolog’s Chief Technology Officer, Warren Habib, aka fotologcto. —along
Greetings! This week I’m coming up on my second anniversary as Fotolog’s CTO. I’ve watched it grow from a reasonably big site of a couple of million members and 40 million photos to one of the largest sites on the Internet, with more than 7.5 million members, 225 million photos, and billions of photo views per month. Like most sites that have experienced such rapid growth, it has not always been easy to keep up. I’m ecstatic when I hear about all of you who enjoy the site, but when things don’t seem to be working quite right, you really have no one to blame but me. Much as I appreciate hate mail, there is no need for it—no one (excluding cypher) is more concerned about Fotolog’s performance around the clock than I am. We are constantly reengineering the site, improving the way things work and look, adding new features, and generally trying to make it run better. Nevertheless, I like to think that things run a bit better than they did when I joined, so I am going to start taking some time to blog about Fotolog from a technical perspective and answer any questions you may have. As will soon become obvious, blogging is not the strongest part of my skill set, but I’ll do it anyway. However, I would much rather just shoot a picture for you. Here’s one I took in Montreal last fall:

Hola, que tal? el dia domingo me cerraron mis tres fotologs, por ningun motivo, ya que no tenian ni pornografia y no violaban ninguna regla de Fotolog, nadie me dio una respuesta de poque lo cerraron y realmente queria saber ya que en él tenia fotos muy viejas y veo que es una injusticia que cierren fotologs asi. Espero que me den alguna respuesta, y que se den cuenta que ustedes son una de las paginas web mas visitadas y que no pueden censurar sin razon a un fotolog como el mio.

…take into account that what you do is tantamout to a public service, and as such people will tend to complain when something annoys them or just because they’re having a bad day…and of course, not many will say “great job” when things DO work…
