One More Holiday Book…

fotologbook

Here’s another fun holiday gift idea, from Fotolog and Thames & Hudson publishers: fotolog.book!

There have been literally millions of new Fotolog members since this book was published, just eight months ago. So here’s some background information for those who had no idea Fotolog has a book!

Fotolog.book: A Global Snapshot for the Digital Age is the largest collection, in a book, of photos that were first published on the Internet. And they were all—more than 1000 of them—posted right here on Fotolog. The book tells the story of Fotolog’s birth and growth in its first few years, and it’s a celebration of what Fotolog has created: the huge network of photo friends, photo family, and photo favorites that we all use as our playground.

Most of all, fotolog.book is about pictures. Self-portraits and still-lifes. Landscapes and city scenes. Beautiful flowers and naughty pets. Serious documentary and silly party shots. Polaroids and Holgas and pinholes—nearly all the different kinds of photos we all see daily on Fotolog’s pages.

There are also many captions and comments, ones that made us laugh, ones that made us see something new in the picture, and the ones that told us a little about the person behind the camera. The provocative original essays and chapter introductions are by the brilliant writer and musician Nick Currie, aka Momus.

Fotolog.book is a representative selection of images that reflect the best nature of Fotolog: the earnest, and sometimes heartbreaking documents, the laugh out loud humor, the ordinary made extraordinary, the pursuit of happiness, and the pictures… all the wonderful pictures.

To see a little bit of the response to fotolog.book, you can check out the excerpts on the Thames & Hudson Web site, and also read a big piece in The Daily Telegraph (UK), an online review at Ektopia, and the thoughtful comments of several Fotologgers, such as snowpony, yolima, and eau.

One truly wonderful personal “review” of fotolog.book was just posted a few days ago on Livejournal, by a blogger named Africanamelie (I’m not sure if she’s a Fotologger or not).

Please visit her site, but I’m going to quote it in it’s entirety here. Africanamelie’s title for this post is a quotation from Nick Currie’s introduction to the chapter on Rio de Janeiro:

“I’ll come to visit you… by cable car.”

i have found my life long treasure… that thing that you would steal from under your bed when the house is burning down or beg from your carjacker before you dejectedly admit you have been robbed.
it is my ‘Fotolog.book’. a fantastic snapshop of the world through the eyes of ‘normal’ people. photos of places, animals, cutlery and consumables but all with invaluable meaning… precious entities that hold special significance, if only to one person.
-the eyes of a homeless french artist who left her child and husband behind to feed a heroine addiction on the streets of new york…
-the magical colours a neon sign reflected in rain drops.
-barbie on a bad hair day
-laundry from around the world
-”81 days (and 9 months) of being gay! but maybe its just a phase i am going through.”
-bare bums on the beach
-frootloops in morning sun and double yolks for supper
with these important images comes the serenity of knowing that eyes across the world - an infastructure of different cultures, religions, life journeys and daily trails - so effortlessly reveal one thing - the beauty of simplicity.
i cannot help but smile - this simple book makes a difference to my life.

Thank you Africanamelie, and to everyone who has been touched by fotolog.book. It was for you.

I’m proud to be a part of this innovative book, and I can’t thank johanna and andrew for thinking that my images were good enough to be included.
(I’m also smitten that there’s a photo of my lovely son on the cover, as well as other images of him elsewhere in the book.)

you replied?
how did you find the site?
these are all things i wonder but moreso i think of how wonderful it is to make contact with someone that forms a part of something i treasure.
what an inspiration.
do you feel as though you have done something great? or is the tip of the iceberg..perhaps a smaller fraction of the dreams you have for positively affecting lives?… inspiring them and bringing them to action.
people have the potential to do great things… really great things… Jesus things and albert einstein things.
i want to do that.
i don’t know how to do that.
but i know that when i see your book, it reminds me that this is possible.
where are you at the moment… literarally… figuratively… metophorically or maybe artistically?
i am photographer… or at least i tell myslef i am.
i am a writer… or at least i tell myself i am.
inevitably, time will tell.
hope to speak with you again.
