I’m a huge advocate of sharp, hyper-crisp detail in photographs, because I often feel that the more descriptive information in the picture, the better. But of course that isn’t always the case. You just have to experience the raven images of Masahisa Fukase, or Bill Jacobson’s series Songs Of Sentient Beings to see that cutting out information and withholding sharp focus can seriously heighten emotional power. (Sidh’s picture above is reminiscent of the great German painter Gerhard Richter’s work.)
It’s great to see a bunch of Fotologgers recently experimenting with autofocus off! Here’s a selection of recent blurtastic photos from them, and from others who have been experimenting with soft focus, motion capture, and/or long exposures for years now.
