Well the rumors were true: Nikon has just announced the new D40, its entry-level 6.1-megapixel DSLR which it says is the company’s “lightest, most compact and easiest to use digital SLR ever.” At a list price of $599, which includes an 18-55mm Nikkor autofocus lens, it’s also the cheapest. (But even with the lens, I’m not sure that’ll be low enough to really catch on with the masses.)
Check out the in-depth preview of the D40 at dpreview.

Ugh. Compare to the d50, and you’ll see that Nikon has completely crippled this camera. The d50 gives you much more room for creative growth. I think that many users of the d40 will find themselves outgrowing the camera and upgrading fairly quickly.

Well, I brought the D40, and got a nice Nikon twin lens deal with it.
Also run a lensbaby on it.
Takes great shots, and feels very well designed in hand.
If your budget can’t go to the higher models, this is a stunner for the price.
True Nikon quality and images.
Haven’t enjoyed a cam as much since my old OM-1
